Greetings from the Middle States Regional Office. In our effort to provide ongoing updates about the exciting initiatives by our state and local education leaders, our focus this month is on the progress in Pennsylvania.
To provide some background, Pennsylvania comprises a diverse educational community of 500 school districts, 29 intermediate units and 1.8 million students. Historically, rural and economically disadvantaged districts have not been able to offer many AP® programs due to limited resources and small student populations. However, new opportunities created by the Race to the Top grant and the December 2009 report published by the Pennsylvania Virtual High School Study Commission have accelerated AP participation and student achievement in the state.
New Jersey, New York & Pennsylvania Students Among National Winners, Finalists in Siemens Competition

Ruoyi Jiang, a senior at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, N.Y., took top individual honors and a $100,000 scholarship in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology in New York City on Dec. 7, 2009. Dmitriy (Tim) Kunisky of Livingston, N.J., was an individual finalist and received a $20,000 scholarship.
Thurgood Marshall Academy Makes Strides with AP® Program

Thurgood Marshall Academy in Washington, D.C., serves Ward 8, the most disadvantaged community in the nation’s capital, where 72 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The law-themed public charter high school opened its doors in 2001 and claims its steady growth in AP participation is a main reason for its success.
Pennsylvania Superintendent Wins National, State Honors

Barely able to catch her breath from winning Pennsylvania Superintendent of the Year, Amy Sichel got more good news: She was also named one of the 10 (out of more than 600) 2010 Tech-Savvy Superintendents from eSchool News, a national monthly publication specializing in educational technology. Sichel is the superintendent for Pennsylvania’s Abington School District.
USDOE to Invest $100 Billion in Grant, College Board Stands Ready to Assist

The U.S. Department of Education plans to invest $100 billion in grants to both K–12 and higher education. The College Board stands ready to assist districts with awareness and interpretation of the RFP, grant development and technical assistance, and partnerships to meet requirements and strengthen responses.
